Actress and former MP Ramya has refused to withdraw a case over alleged obscene, abusive and threatening social media messages, despite accused persons and their family members reportedly appealing to her for forgiveness during court proceedings in Bengaluru.
The latest development emerged on 6 September 2026, with multiple Kannada news outlets reporting that the accused asked Ramya to forgive them and withdraw the case.
Some reports said individuals accused in the case, described as fans of Kannada actor Darshan, even fell at Ramya’s feet and sought forgiveness.
Ramya, however, has maintained that she does not want to withdraw the case.
Her reported position is that the case should serve as a wider lesson about the consequences of targeting women with obscene or abusive comments online.
The controversy dates back to 2025, when Ramya complained to Bengaluru police after receiving a wave of vulgar, derogatory and threatening messages following her comments related to developments in the Renukaswamy murder case.
The Central Crime Branch later investigated the matter and filed a chargesheet.

What Happened During the Latest Court Proceedings?
The latest development concerns proceedings in a Bengaluru city civil court in connection with the online abuse case.
According to reports published on Sunday, the accused and some of their family members appealed to Ramya to forgive them and withdraw the case.
Reports said they acknowledged that a mistake had been made and requested that the dispute be brought to an end.
Some reports went further, saying accused persons described as Darshan fans fell at Ramya’s feet while seeking forgiveness.
Their family members were also reported to have appealed to the actress.
This was reportedly not the first attempt to seek a withdrawal. Kannada Prabha reported that similar requests had been made during an earlier hearing as well.
Ramya did not agree.
She reportedly made it clear that she intends to continue with the legal proceedings rather than settle the issue through an apology.
Why Is Ramya Refusing to Withdraw the Case?
Ramya’s reported reasoning goes beyond the individual accused.
Her position is that access to a smartphone and social media cannot become a licence to abuse another person.
According to reports from the proceedings, she questioned whether people should be free to make obscene comments about others simply because they have a mobile phone and internet access.
She also reportedly said that people should think carefully before posting degrading comments about a woman online.
For Ramya, therefore, continuing the case appears to be about establishing accountability rather than simply receiving a personal apology.
She has reportedly indicated that she is prepared to appear before the court whenever required to give evidence.
Her message is essentially that online behaviour can have offline legal consequences.
How Did the Ramya Online Abuse Case Begin?
To understand the latest courtroom development, it is necessary to go back to July 2025.
Ramya had commented publicly on developments surrounding the Renukaswamy murder case.
Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa is accused No. 2 in that separate murder case.
After Ramya shared a report concerning Supreme Court proceedings and expressed support for justice for Renukaswamy’s family, her social media accounts were flooded with hostile messages.
According to her subsequent police complaint, the messages went far beyond ordinary criticism or disagreement.
She alleged that she received obscene, vulgar and threatening messages through Instagram and other social media activity.
Some reportedly included rape and death threats.
That distinction is important.
Public figures can be criticised.
People can disagree with an actor’s political opinion, comments about another celebrity, or position on a court case.
But threats and targeted obscene abuse are a different matter.
Ramya Filed a Formal Police Complaint
Ramya approached Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh on 28 July 2025 and sought action over the messages.
She provided details of numerous social media accounts allegedly involved in the abuse.
Contemporary reporting said she had identified 43 accounts while alleging that many more fake profiles could have been involved.
The investigation was subsequently transferred to the Central Crime Branch, or CCB.
The Karnataka State Commission for Women also took suo motu note of the online abuse and sought police action.
The Film Industry for Rights and Equality, or FIRE, publicly expressed solidarity with Ramya as well.
The case therefore developed from a social media controversy into a formal criminal investigation.
CCB Investigation Led to Arrests
Police subsequently arrested several people in connection with the messages.
One of the principal accused identified during the investigation was Pramod Gowda, a resident of KR Puram.
According to an August 2025 report by The New Indian Express, investigators alleged that he used a friend’s mobile phone to send objectionable messages to Ramya.
Police also identified and arrested other accused during the investigation.
Two minors who were found to have sent derogatory messages were warned, according to reporting at the time.
It is important to preserve the legal distinction here:
Those named in the investigation are accused unless and until guilt is established through the appropriate judicial process.
An arrest or chargesheet is not the same as a conviction.
CCB Filed a 380-Page Chargesheet
The investigation eventually produced a substantial chargesheet.
In October 2025, The New Indian Express reported that the CCB had submitted a 380-page chargesheet against 12 accused to a Bengaluru court.
The chargesheet reportedly included screenshots of messages as well as statements collected during the investigation.
At that stage, police were also searching for additional accused and expected to submit a supplementary chargesheet after further arrests.
That explains why the matter is now playing out through the courts rather than remaining simply a dispute on social media.
The latest requests for forgiveness are taking place against that legal background.
Are All the Accused Darshan Fans?
This requires careful wording.
Much of the Kannada coverage refers to the accused as Darshan fans.
The original controversy also began after Ramya’s remarks concerning the Renukaswamy case, in which Darshan is an accused.
Ramya’s initial complaint concerned messages allegedly sent by people identifying themselves with or operating accounts associated with Darshan’s fan community.
However, an October 2025 report on the CCB chargesheet specifically noted that it was not clear whether every accused was a Darshan fan.
Therefore, it would be inaccurate to automatically describe every person facing proceedings as an officially established member of a Darshan fan organisation.
The safer description is:
“Accused persons, some of whom have been described in reports as Darshan fans.”
There is also no basis in this development to suggest that Darshan personally directed the alleged online abuse.
The legal case concerns the individuals accused of sending the messages.
Criticism Is Different From Abuse and Threats
The larger issue raised by the case extends beyond Kannada cinema.
Social media has made it easier for audiences to communicate directly with actors, politicians, journalists, sportspersons, creators and other public figures.
That has created enormous space for legitimate criticism and debate.
But criticism and abuse are not the same thing.
Saying “I disagree with Ramya’s opinion” is criticism.
Targeting someone with alleged rape threats, death threats or obscene personal messages crosses into a very different category and can potentially attract legal consequences.
The same standard should apply regardless of which actor, political party or fan group someone supports.
Fan Rivalries Cannot Override Individual Responsibility
Cinema fan culture is particularly strong in Karnataka and across South India.
Fans naturally celebrate actors, defend their films and debate rival stars.
None of that is inherently problematic.
The problem begins when fan loyalty is used to justify threats, harassment or targeted abuse.
An important principle in the Ramya case is therefore individual responsibility.
People are responsible for what they post from their accounts.
Being angry about criticism of a favourite actor does not remove that responsibility.
At the same time, responsible reporting should avoid blaming an entire fan base for the alleged actions of particular individuals.
Millions of people can admire an actor without participating in harassment.
Ramya Wants the Case to Serve as a Lesson
According to today’s reports, Ramya’s refusal to withdraw the case is based partly on what she believes the proceedings could communicate to other social media users.
She reportedly wants people to think before posting degrading comments about women.
Her position also appears consistent with what she said when the controversy first erupted in 2025.
At the time, Ramya said she had previously tolerated ordinary trolling as something public figures often face but believed the messages in this instance crossed a line.
She subsequently chose the legal route.
More than a year later, she appears unwilling to reverse that decision merely because apologies have reportedly been offered.
What Happens Next?
The case remains before the court.
The CCB has already submitted a chargesheet, and Ramya has reportedly said she is willing to appear whenever the court requires her evidence.
The accused continue to have the right to defend themselves through the legal process.
Their reported apologies and requests for withdrawal do not, by themselves, establish guilt or determine the final legal outcome.
Likewise, Ramya’s refusal to withdraw the case does not determine the verdict.
That is for the judicial process.
Further hearings will determine how the proceedings develop.
Key Takeaway
The latest development is real.
Accused persons and their family members reportedly asked actress and former MP Ramya to forgive them and withdraw the online abuse case during proceedings in Bengaluru.
Some reports said accused persons described as Darshan fans fell at her feet while making the request.
Ramya refused.
Her reported position is that the case should serve as a warning that social media users cannot treat online platforms as consequence-free spaces for obscene or abusive attacks against women.
But two distinctions remain essential.
The people facing proceedings are accused; guilt is ultimately for the court to determine.
And the alleged actions of particular individuals should not be attributed to actor Darshan or to his entire fan base without evidence.
The case now continues through the judicial process.
