The 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment has not yet been officially announced. The final figure is expected after the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics releases September 2026 inflation data at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time on October 14, completing the three months of CPI-W data needed for the annual calculation.

That distinction matters because estimates circulating before the release are forecasts, not official benefit increases.

The Social Security Administration currently lists 2.8% as the latest COLA, the increase that applies to 2026 benefits. For 2027, prominent forecasts immediately before the final September inflation reading have centered around 3.5% to 3.6%.

The Senior Citizens League projected a 3.5% adjustment after the August inflation report, while AARP projected 3.6%. The actual figure can differ because the calculation depends on the final September Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, known as CPI-W.

Once the government publishes that number, beneficiaries will be able to calculate a much clearer estimate of what their own monthly payment could look like in 2027.

Key Takeaways

  • Official 2027 COLA expected after September CPI-W data (Oct 14, 8:30 a.m. ET).
  • Current forecasts: ~3.5%–3.6% (vs 2.8% for 2026).
  • Applies to Social Security retirement, survivor, disability and SSI benefits.
  • Net bank deposit may rise less than the full COLA due to Medicare premiums.
  • No separate application needed — SSA adjusts eligible benefits automatically.

Why the September inflation report decides the 2027 COLA

Social Security's annual COLA is designed to help benefits keep pace with changes in consumer prices.

It is not determined by Congress each year, and it is not based simply on the headline annual inflation rate reported in the news.

The Social Security Administration uses the CPI-W produced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

For a normal annual adjustment, SSA compares the average CPI-W for July, August and September of the current year with the average for the same three-month period in the last year in which a COLA became effective.

For the 2027 adjustment, that means comparing the third-quarter 2026 CPI-W average with the corresponding third-quarter 2025 average.

If the newer average is higher, the percentage increase is calculated and rounded to the nearest one-tenth of one percentage point.

That is why September matters so much. July and August are already known, but the final month completes the third-quarter average.

What current 2027 COLA estimates suggest

Before the September CPI release, two closely watched estimates have pointed to a larger adjustment than beneficiaries received for 2026.

The Senior Citizens League projected a 3.5% COLA.

AARP projected 3.6%.

Neither figure should be presented as the official 2027 Social Security increase until the final CPI-W calculation is available and SSA confirms the adjustment.

For comparison, Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits increased by 2.8% for 2026.

That 2026 adjustment raised the estimated average monthly benefit for retired workers from about $2,015 before the COLA to approximately $2,071 after it, according to SSA's 2026 fact sheet.

The percentage for 2027 therefore matters not only because it determines the increase for individual checks, but because it will affect tens of millions of retirement, survivor, disability and SSI recipients.

What a 3.5% increase would mean for common benefit amounts

Until the official number is published, the following table is only an illustration using the 3.5% forecast.

Current monthly benefitIncrease at 3.5%Illustrative new monthly benefit
$1,000$35.00$1,035.00
$1,500$52.50$1,552.50
$2,000$70.00$2,070.00

If the final COLA were instead 3.6%, the same benefits would rise to approximately:

Current monthly benefitIncrease at 3.6%Illustrative new monthly benefit
$1,000$36.00$1,036.00
$1,500$54.00$1,554.00
$2,000$72.00$2,072.00

These are simple percentage examples rather than exact SSA payment calculations.

A person's actual benefit can be different because Social Security applies its own benefit calculations and rounding rules, while deductions such as Medicare premiums can affect the amount ultimately deposited into a beneficiary's bank account.

Once the official COLA is announced, these forecast tables should be replaced with a single table using the confirmed percentage.

How to estimate your own 2027 Social Security increase

A simple preliminary calculation is:

Current monthly benefit × COLA percentage = estimated monthly increase.

For example, if the official increase eventually comes in at 3.5% and a person receives $1,800 a month:

$1,800 × 0.035 = $63

That would suggest a benefit of approximately $1,863 before considering deductions or other individual adjustments.

At 3.6%, the same $1,800 benefit would increase by approximately $64.80.

This method is useful for planning, but beneficiaries should ultimately rely on the amount shown by the Social Security Administration rather than treating a hand calculation as their official payment.

Why your bank deposit may not rise by the full COLA amount

The COLA describes the percentage increase in the Social Security benefit itself.

It does not necessarily mean every beneficiary's net bank deposit will rise by exactly that percentage.

One major reason is Medicare Part B.

Many Medicare beneficiaries have their Part B premium deducted directly from their Social Security payment. If the Part B premium rises at the same time that Social Security benefits rise, part of the COLA can effectively be absorbed by the higher healthcare premium.

The standard Medicare Part B premium is $202.90 per month for 2026.

The 2026 Medicare Trustees Report estimates a standard Part B premium of $209.50 for 2027. That is an estimate rather than the final 2027 premium, so beneficiaries should not yet use $209.50 as a confirmed charge.

The final Medicare premium is determined separately from the Social Security COLA.

This distinction is important because headlines describing a beneficiary as receiving, for example, "$70 more per month" are describing a gross benefit calculation. The actual change in take-home Social Security income can be smaller for someone whose Medicare premium is deducted from the payment.

Some beneficiaries are also affected by the Medicare "hold harmless" provision, which can limit certain Part B premium increases when they would otherwise reduce a person's Social Security payment. Individual circumstances vary.

Who receives the Social Security COLA?

The COLA is not limited to people receiving traditional retirement checks.

Annual adjustments can affect Social Security retirement benefits, survivor benefits and disability benefits, as well as Supplemental Security Income payment levels.

SSA said the 2.8% increase for 2026 affected Social Security and SSI payments for about 75 million Americans, although some people receive both programs and should not be counted twice when comparing separate program totals.

The beneficiary population for 2027 will not be identical, so the 2026 figure should not automatically be presented as the exact number of people receiving the 2027 adjustment.

When would the 2027 increase begin?

Under the regular COLA system, a newly announced adjustment for 2027 would be reflected in Social Security payments beneficiaries receive beginning in January 2027.

SSI follows a slightly different payment schedule.

SSI payments are normally made on the first day of the month. When the first falls on a weekend or federal holiday, SSA issues the payment on the preceding business day.

Social Security provides an official annual payment calendar, and beneficiaries should check that calendar or their personal Social Security account for their exact payment date.

Social Security payment schedule: why beneficiaries get paid on different days

For many people who applied for Social Security after April 1997, monthly payment timing depends on the birthday of the worker on whose record the benefit is paid.

The normal schedule is:

BirthdayNormal Social Security payment day
1st through 10thSecond Wednesday
11th through 20thThird Wednesday
21st through 31stFourth Wednesday

There are exceptions.

People who started receiving Social Security under older payment rules, people receiving both Social Security and SSI, and some other beneficiaries can follow a different schedule.

SSI itself is normally paid on the first day of the month, subject to weekend and federal holiday adjustments.

That means a COLA announcement does not move everyone to one new nationwide payment date. The percentage changes the benefit amount; the beneficiary's applicable payment schedule determines when that payment arrives.

Why a larger COLA does not necessarily mean retirees are better off

A higher COLA can sound like straightforward good news, but the reason behind a larger adjustment is usually higher inflation.

The purpose of the COLA is to preserve purchasing power rather than provide an unrelated raise.

If food, housing, healthcare, utilities, transportation and other living costs have risen substantially, a larger Social Security increase may simply help beneficiaries catch up with those price increases.

This is particularly important for retirees who rely heavily on fixed or relatively stable sources of income.

A 3.5% COLA, for example, would provide more nominal dollars than a 2.8% COLA. But whether a household feels financially better off depends on how its own expenses change.

Someone facing unusually high rent or medical costs could experience inflation very differently from the CPI-W average.

Why Social Security uses CPI-W

The CPI-W measures price changes experienced by urban wage earners and clerical workers.

Congress established the statutory framework that connects Social Security COLAs to this index.

Critics of the current system have periodically argued that older Americans spend differently from the working population represented by CPI-W, particularly because healthcare can account for a significant share of retirement expenses.

Various proposals have therefore suggested different inflation measures, including indexes designed to better reflect older consumers.

Those proposals are separate from the current COLA calculation.

Unless federal law is changed, the annual Social Security adjustment continues to be calculated under the existing CPI-W formula.

The 2026 COLA provides useful context

The most recent official adjustment was 2.8% for 2026.

SSA estimated that the average retired worker's monthly benefit would rise from approximately $2,015 before that adjustment to about $2,071 after it.

SSA also reported that the maximum taxable earnings subject to Social Security tax increased to $184,500 for 2026, while several disability and earnings-test thresholds also changed.

The eventual 2027 COLA announcement is therefore likely to be accompanied by more than one number.

SSA commonly publishes updated benefit-related thresholds and program figures alongside its annual adjustment information.

Readers should distinguish those figures from the COLA itself.

What to check when the official 2027 COLA is released

The most important number is the official COLA percentage published by the Social Security Administration.

After that, beneficiaries should check several additional details:

  1. Their estimated new monthly benefit

Apply the official percentage only as an initial estimate and later verify the actual benefit amount shown by SSA.

  1. The effective payment period

Look for SSA's confirmation of when higher Social Security and SSI payments begin.

  1. Medicare premiums

Beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare should compare their new gross Social Security benefit with the finalized Medicare Part B premium and any other deductions that apply to them.

  1. Updated program thresholds

The annual Social Security announcement can also include changes affecting taxable earnings, earnings-test limits, disability thresholds and other program amounts.

  1. The official payment calendar

Beneficiaries should use SSA's 2027 payment schedule rather than relying on viral social media posts claiming that everyone receives checks on the same date.

Beware of misleading COLA claims

The annual COLA announcement generates heavy search interest, and that also creates an opportunity for misleading posts.

Beneficiaries should be cautious about claims such as:

  • "Everyone will receive an extra $500."
  • "SSA approved a special bonus check."
  • "All retirees will receive the same dollar increase."
  • "Your 2027 check has already been finalized."

A percentage COLA does not create the same dollar increase for every beneficiary.

A person receiving $1,000 per month and a person receiving $3,000 per month will see different dollar increases even though the percentage adjustment is the same.

The safest source for the official percentage and individual benefit information remains the Social Security Administration.

What happens on October 14

The Bureau of Labor Statistics is scheduled to release the September 2026 Consumer Price Index data at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time on October 14.

That release will provide the missing September CPI-W reading needed to complete the third-quarter calculation.

At that point, the official 2027 Social Security COLA can be determined.

Until then, 3.5%, 3.6% and other figures circulating online should be clearly labeled as projections.

The difference may look small, but even one-tenth of a percentage point matters when the adjustment is applied across millions of monthly benefit payments.

What beneficiaries should do now

There is no need for beneficiaries to apply separately for an annual COLA. When a COLA takes effect, SSA adjusts eligible benefit amounts automatically.

People trying to prepare a 2027 household budget can use the current forecasts as scenarios, but they should avoid treating them as guaranteed income.

After the official announcement, the most useful next steps will be to check the confirmed percentage, calculate an approximate gross benefit, watch for finalized Medicare costs where relevant, and then verify the personalized benefit amount through SSA.

The key point for October 14 is simple: the final September inflation data come first.

Until the Social Security Administration confirms the resulting 2027 adjustment, there is no official COLA percentage to place in a headline as fact.

Key Takeaway

2027 Social Security COLA expected after Sept CPI-W data (Oct 14).

Forecasts ~3.5%–3.6%. Official figure not yet out.

Net deposit may rise less than full COLA due to Medicare premiums.
