The launch is also historically significant for Apple because it was the first major iPhone unveiling under John Ternus, who became CEO on September 1 after Tim Cook moved to the executive chairman role.

With a starting price approaching $2,000 — and ₹3 lakh in India — the biggest question is now whether Apple’s enormous installed user base can push foldable smartphones beyond their relatively small premium niche.

Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Is Finally Official

After years of speculation, Apple has officially joined the foldable smartphone category.

The company describes the iPhone Duo as the biggest transformation of the iPhone since the original model.

The design uses a book-style folding mechanism.

When closed, users get a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display. Opening the device reveals a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR folding display, the largest display Apple has offered on an iPhone.

Apple says the Duo is roughly passport-sized when closed.

When opened, it becomes the thinnest iPhone Apple has produced.

The larger display is intended to provide additional space for videos, gaming, reading, productivity and multitasking while retaining the portability of a smartphone.

iPhone Duo Price: $1,999 in the US, ₹299,900 in India

The price immediately establishes the Duo as an ultra-premium smartphone.

Apple’s official Indian pricing is:

  • 256GB: ₹299,900
  • 512GB: ₹324,900
  • 1TB: ₹374,900
  • 2TB: ₹449,900

In the United States, the base 256GB model starts at $1,999.

The phone is available in two finishes: Star White and Night Sky.

At ₹449,900 for the top 2TB configuration, the Duo enters price territory far beyond conventional flagship smartphones.

That makes affordability one of the biggest debates surrounding the launch.

Apple is effectively asking buyers to pay for a device intended to combine some of the functionality of an iPhone and an iPad in a single foldable form factor.

7.6-Inch Foldable Display Is the Centrepiece

The display is the defining feature of the iPhone Duo.

The internal panel measures 7.6 inches, while the outer screen measures 5.4 inches.

Both use Apple’s Super Retina XDR technology and support ProMotion and Always-On display functionality.

Apple has also developed a nano-texture finish for the folding display, designed to minimise glare and make the crease less visually distracting.

One challenge faced by virtually every foldable manufacturer has been the visible crease running through the flexible display.

Apple’s approach does not mean the physical fold disappears entirely, but the company says its display construction is designed to make it substantially less noticeable during normal use.

The outer and inner displays also use matching proportions intended to make content transition naturally when users open or close the device.

Titanium Construction and New Hinge

Durability is another critical issue for foldable phones.

Unlike conventional smartphones, foldables contain moving mechanical components and flexible screens that repeatedly bend during everyday use.

Apple has developed a precision hinge specifically for the Duo.

The phone uses Grade 5 titanium, including a titanium frame and hinge cover.

Apple says the design provides a smooth folding action while maintaining structural durability.

The company also says recycled titanium is used in the 3D-printed hinge cover as part of its environmental programme.

The Duo can be used completely folded, fully unfolded, or positioned at intermediate angles.

That allows it to function in different configurations for video calls, photography, entertainment and productivity.

Powered by Apple’s A20 Pro Chip

Inside the Duo is Apple’s new A20 Pro chip.

The processor includes a six-core CPU, a seven-core GPU with neural accelerators and dual 16-core neural engines.

Apple has also developed a custom thermal-management system using a vapor chamber.

Thermal management becomes particularly important in a foldable because manufacturers have less conventional internal space in which to distribute processors, batteries and cooling components.

Apple uses a dual-battery architecture, distributing battery capacity across the two halves of the device.

The company is therefore attempting to maintain flagship-level performance while accommodating the mechanical requirements of the folding design.

Apple Replaces Qualcomm Modem With Its New C2

The Duo also includes Apple’s new C2 cellular modem.

This represents another stage in Apple’s long-term effort to reduce its dependence on third-party modem technology.

The C2 supports mmWave in the United States and includes AI-assisted improvements designed to enhance cellular reliability.

Apple has also included its N1 wireless networking chip, supporting Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread.

The significance goes beyond the Duo itself.

Bringing more wireless components in-house gives Apple greater control over the interaction between hardware, software, power consumption and connectivity.

iPhone Duo Camera System

The iPhone Duo includes a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system.

That consists of a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera.

Apple has also developed photography features specifically around the foldable design.

One example is Duo Preview, which can use the outer display while taking photographs.

The folding mechanism can also allow the device to stand at different angles without requiring a separate tripod for certain photographs or video calls.

Apple’s Smart Take feature uses on-device intelligence to help capture group photographs when subjects are ready.

The Duo therefore uses its physical design as part of the camera experience rather than simply adding a folding screen to a conventional iPhone.

Battery Life: Up to 44 Hours of Video on Outer Display

Battery life is particularly important for a device powering two displays.

Apple’s Indian specifications list up to 44 hours of video playback using the outer display and up to 31 hours using the inner display.

Reuters reports that Apple describes the Duo as providing about 24 hours of mixed dual-screen use.

Fast charging can bring the battery to approximately 50% in about 20 minutes under supported conditions.

Actual battery life will naturally vary depending on display usage, connectivity, applications, brightness and other factors.

iOS 27 Has Been Redesigned for a Foldable iPhone

Hardware is only half of Apple’s foldable strategy.

The company has adapted iOS 27 for the larger folding display.

Users can run apps side by side and take advantage of a larger workspace when the device is opened.

Apple demonstrated productivity applications, including video conferencing and messaging, highlighting broader Zoom and Slack interfaces.

The Duo can also operate in partially folded configurations.

That means the upper part of the display can show video or content while the lower portion provides controls or another application.

This is where Apple hopes to differentiate the Duo from simply owning an iPhone with a bigger screen.

The company wants the device to shift between conventional smartphone use and a compact tablet-style interface depending on how it is being held.

Apple Pencil Support Is Coming

Another notable development is support for the Apple Pencil.

Apple says Pencil functionality will arrive later this year.

That brings the Duo even closer to Apple’s iPad ecosystem.

A foldable iPhone that can open into a 7.6-inch workspace and support a stylus could appeal to users who frequently annotate documents, take handwritten notes, or draw or perform precision tasks.

However, prospective buyers should note that Pencil support is an upcoming capability rather than something that necessarily defines the experience on launch day.

Apple Intelligence and New Siri AI

Artificial intelligence also played a significant role in Apple’s presentation.

The Duo combines Apple Intelligence with the company’s updated Siri AI.

Apple continues to emphasise privacy as a differentiating feature.

The company’s approach is to perform AI processing directly on the device whenever practical rather than automatically sending personal information to remote servers.

Ternus used the launch to stress Apple’s position that users should retain control of their personal information.

The combination of the A20 Pro chip, Neural Engines and the larger display gives Apple a platform for integrating AI more deeply into productivity and everyday smartphone tasks.

When Can You Buy the iPhone Duo?

The iPhone Duo does not go on sale immediately after its September announcement.

Apple says pre-orders begin on Friday, October 16.

General availability begins on Friday, October 23, in more than 70 countries and regions, including India, the United States, China, Japan, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Singapore, the UAE and the United Kingdom.

Additional markets will receive the device beginning October 30.

For Indian customers, pre-orders are scheduled to open at 5:30 PM IST on October 16.

Why Did Apple Wait So Long to Launch a Foldable?

Apple is entering the category years after several competitors.

Samsung introduced its first Galaxy Fold in 2019, while Huawei and other Chinese manufacturers subsequently developed multiple generations of folding phones.

Foldables, however, have remained a relatively small segment of the global smartphone market.

That gave Apple an unusual opportunity.

Rather than being first, the company could observe problems experienced by earlier products — including screen creases, hinge durability, thickness, software optimisation and battery compromises — before releasing its own interpretation.

Apple has followed similar strategies in other categories.

It was not the first company to sell an MP3 player, smartwatch, wireless earbuds or smartphone.

Its strategy has often been to enter an existing category after the technology matures and attempt to simplify the overall experience.

The Duo will test whether that strategy can work again.

Samsung and Huawei Already Have a Major Head Start

Apple is entering a competitive market.

Samsung has years of experience producing foldable smartphones.

Huawei has established an especially strong position in China’s foldable segment.

Reuters reports that Huawei controls nearly 80% of China’s foldable market, according to IDC data cited in its coverage.

That makes China particularly important for Apple.

The company has faced intense competition there from domestic smartphone manufacturers.

A distinctive premium device such as the Duo could potentially give existing iPhone users a reason to upgrade while attracting customers interested in high-end foldables.

Analysts cited by Reuters expect demand to be strong relative to Apple’s initial production capacity.

But the long-term question is whether that demand extends beyond enthusiasts and wealthy early adopters.

Foldable Smartphones Are Still a Niche Market

Despite years of attention, folding phones remain a small portion of overall smartphone sales.

AP reports that foldables currently account for less than 5% of global smartphone sales, while other industry estimates using shipment-based methodologies put their share even lower.

The exact percentage therefore varies by dataset and definition.

The broader point is clear: foldables remain a niche category compared with conventional smartphones.

Apple’s entry could change that.

Its enormous developer ecosystem means application developers now have a powerful commercial incentive to optimise apps for folding screens.

If that happens, the impact of the Duo could extend beyond Apple’s own sales.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max Also Become More Expensive

The Duo was not Apple’s only major iPhone announcement.

Apple also unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

In the United States, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the Pro Max starts at $1,299.

Reuters reports that both starting prices are $100 higher than the corresponding iPhone 17 Pro generation.

In India, Apple’s online store currently lists the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max line from ₹164,900.

That makes higher pricing a broader theme around Apple’s 2026 flagship lineup rather than an issue limited to the foldable Duo.

However, it would be inaccurate to attribute every price increase exclusively to supply-chain pressure without a more specific statement from Apple.

Premium positioning, component costs, product configuration, tariffs, exchange rates and market strategy can all influence pricing.

Innovation Versus Price Will Define the Debate

The Duo creates a fascinating consumer question.

Technologically, it delivers several things that conventional iPhones cannot:

a much larger screen in a pocketable device, split-screen multitasking, flexible viewing positions, Apple Pencil support and software specifically designed around the folding form factor.

But those advantages come at a very high price.

At ₹299,900 for the base model, an Indian customer could purchase multiple premium smartphones or combine an iPhone with another Apple device for a similar total cost.

That means the Duo is unlikely to be a mass-market iPhone immediately.

Its initial audience is more likely to include enthusiasts, professionals, business users, creators and premium buyers who value the folding format enough to pay for it.

Is the iPhone Duo Worth ₹299,900?

For most buyers, the answer will depend less on specifications and more on whether the foldable format solves a genuine need.

Someone who primarily uses an iPhone for calls, messaging, social media, photography and everyday applications may receive little practical benefit from paying almost ₹3 lakh.

A user who frequently reads documents, multitasks, joins video meetings, edits content or wants an iPad-like workspace without carrying another device may find the Duo more compelling.

There is also another reason to be cautious with any first-generation product: long-term durability.

Apple has made substantial claims about the hinge, titanium construction and folding display, but independent testing and months of real-world use will provide much stronger evidence about durability than a launch presentation.

Potential buyers who do not need the device immediately may therefore benefit from waiting for detailed independent reviews.

The Bigger Story Is Not the $1,999 Price

The price will dominate early headlines, but Apple’s entry into foldables could have a more important long-term consequence.

Apple has effectively validated foldable smartphones as a permanent part of the premium phone market.

Competitors will now be measured not only against one another but also against Apple’s approach to hardware-software integration.

App developers have a stronger incentive to optimise interfaces for folding screens.

Component manufacturers have a larger potential market for flexible displays, specialised hinges and other foldable technologies.

And consumers now have an Apple alternative in a category previously dominated by Android manufacturers.

The first-generation Duo may therefore matter even if it remains too expensive for most buyers.

What Happens Next?

The immediate test will come when iPhone Duo pre-orders open on October 16.

Analysts will watch whether demand exceeds Apple’s initial supply, particularly in the United States and China.

The next test will come from independent reviews.

Apple’s claims about display quality, crease visibility, hinge durability, battery life, cameras and multitasking will need to survive real-world testing.

And the longer-term test will be whether Apple eventually pushes foldable technology into less expensive models.

For now, one fact is clear:

Apple is no longer watching the foldable-phone market from the sidelines.

With the iPhone Duo, the world’s most influential premium smartphone brand has entered the category with a device starting at $1,999 in the U.S. and ₹299,900 in India.

Whether consumers see that as a breakthrough worth paying for — or an impressive technology carrying an excessive first-generation premium — will determine whether the Duo becomes another transformative Apple product or remains an ultra-premium niche.

Key Takeaway

Apple has launched its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, starting at $1,999 (₹299,900 in India).

It features a 7.6-inch inner display, 5.4-inch outer screen, A20 Pro chip, titanium construction and iOS 27 multitasking.

Pre-orders open October 16; sales begin October 23.

The price places it firmly in the ultra-premium segment. Foldables remain a small share of the global market, but Apple’s entry could accelerate developer support and mainstream interest.
