Lying wounded on the cockpit floor, Captain Smit Machchhar could sense something was badly wrong with the aircraft.

He had already suffered serious injuries during what authorities say was an attack inside the flight deck of flydubai Flight FZ1073. The Boeing 737 was descending rapidly. According to the resolution later introduced in the United States House of Representatives, it lost more than 14,000 feet of altitude in less than 30 seconds.

Machchhar later recalled thinking that he had one final chance to act.

The cockpit door was close.

Despite his injuries and the continuing struggle, he reached it and managed to open it.

That moment changed what happened next.

Passengers and other crew members were then able to enter the cockpit, restrain the co-pilot accused of carrying out the attack and help regain control of the situation. Additional flydubai pilots travelling aboard the aircraft ultimately helped bring Flight FZ1073 safely down at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.

More than a week later, the story has moved beyond the dramatic events aboard the Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight.

Machchhar, a Mumbai-born commercial pilot with 17 years of flying experience, is recovering from serious injuries. A bipartisan resolution has been introduced in the US House to honour him, the crew and passengers who intervened. Israel has separately announced that he will receive its Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism once he has recovered sufficiently.

For Rajatheertha readers, this is also a significant update to the initial story reported on October 1. At that stage, investigators were still establishing the motive behind the cockpit confrontation and Machchhar's medical outlook remained uncertain.

There is now considerably more verified information about both.

Key Takeaways

  • Captain Smit Machchhar opened the cockpit door of Flydubai Flight FZ1073 despite serious injuries during an alleged attack.
  • The aircraft lost more than 14,000 feet of altitude in under 30 seconds before control was restored.
  • A bipartisan US House resolution (H.Res. 1612) has been introduced to honour Machchhar, the crew and intervening passengers.
  • Israel has announced that Machchhar will receive the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism after his recovery.
  • The Mumbai-born pilot remains under medical care in the UAE and is showing signs of improvement.
  • The co-pilot’s alleged actions remain under investigation and should be treated as allegations pending legal process.

The Seconds When Everything Changed

Flydubai Flight FZ1073 departed Dubai International Airport on September 30, 2026, bound for Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv.

According to the US House resolution, the aircraft was carrying approximately 174 passengers, including four US citizens and 27 children, along with its crew.

During the flight, Machchhar's co-pilot allegedly attacked him inside the cockpit with an emergency crash axe and allegedly attempted to take control of the aircraft.

The confrontation coincided with an extraordinary loss of altitude.

H.Res. 1612 states that the aircraft dropped more than 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds. The resolution credits Machchhar with continuing to resist despite being gravely injured and eventually unlocking the cockpit door so that others could intervene.

Machchhar has since provided his own account.

Speaking to Prime Minister Narendra Modi from his hospital bed, he said his years of flying experience allowed him to recognise that the aircraft was descending even while he was injured on the floor.

He described telling himself: “This is the last push, Smit.”

The door was within reach.

He got to it and opened it.

His account is important because it explains one of the most consequential moments in the emergency: the cockpit had effectively become inaccessible from outside while the confrontation was taking place.

Opening the door gave the people on the other side an opportunity to intervene.

Machchhar has also resisted presenting himself as the only person responsible for the successful outcome. In his account to Modi, he emphasised that the others who entered and responded also played critical roles.

That distinction matters.

The safe outcome was not the work of one individual alone. It involved Machchhar's effort to open the cockpit, passengers and crew members who intervened, people who helped provide emergency medical assistance, and trained pilots who helped bring the aircraft safely to the ground.

What Authorities Say About the Alleged Attack

The case remains under investigation, and the alleged actions of the co-pilot should continue to be described carefully.

Flydubai's initial public statement confirmed that Flight FZ1073 had experienced an incident while travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, that the aircraft had landed safely at Tabuk and that all passengers were safe and accounted for.

The airline said it was cooperating with the relevant authorities.

The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority later described the event as a security incident and confirmed that some members of the crew were injured.

On October 3, the UAE Attorney-General went considerably further.

The Attorney-General said investigators had determined that the co-pilot attempted to carry out a terrorist act, alleging that he attacked the captain with a crash axe and attempted to take control of the aircraft.

However, the investigation is continuing into the full circumstances, motive and possible connections surrounding the case.

That means individual allegations should not be treated as a final judicial finding against the co-pilot while the investigative and legal process continues.

Who Is Captain Smit Machchhar?

Captain Smit Machchhar is an Indian commercial airline pilot from Mumbai with extensive experience on the Boeing 737 family.

Reports based on his professional background place him in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area.

His route into aviation was not entirely conventional.

Machchhar initially appeared headed towards a career connected with his family's textile business before becoming interested in aviation. He later completed commercial pilot training in New Zealand and trained for the Boeing 737.

His professional career included around 11 years with SpiceJet, where he progressed through increasingly senior responsibilities.

He eventually became a senior commander and Line Training Captain, a role involving the training, assessment and mentoring of other pilots.

Machchhar joined flydubai in June 2022 as a direct-entry captain.

His professional background shows more than 9,700 hours of Boeing 737 flying experience, including thousands of hours as pilot-in-command.

During his conversation with Modi after the FZ1073 incident, Machchhar described himself as having flown for 17 years and served as a captain for 11.

That experience became directly relevant during the emergency.

Even after collapsing from his injuries, he said he could recognise through the aircraft's movement that it was losing altitude.

Commercial pilots spend years developing that kind of situational awareness—not simply operating controls but interpreting aircraft behaviour, sounds, movement and changing flight conditions under pressure.

Machchhar's actions aboard FZ1073 have consequently been praised not only as an act of physical courage but also as an example of professional awareness surviving under extreme circumstances.

From Mumbai Pilot to International Recognition

The international response began almost immediately.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly described Machchhar as a hero on October 1, praising his courage despite his serious injuries and saying his actions helped avert a major tragedy.

The following day, Modi spoke directly with Machchhar by video call.

The Prime Minister's Office said Machchhar described how his 17 years of flying experience helped him realise the aircraft was descending and how he made a final effort to open the cockpit door despite being badly wounded.

But the recognition has since widened far beyond India.

What the US House Resolution Actually Does

A significant new development came in Washington.

US Representatives Josh Gottheimer, Michael McCaul and Don Bacon introduced bipartisan H.Res. 1612, titled “Honoring Captain Smit Machchhar and the crew and passengers of Flydubai Flight 1073, and condemning the attempted terrorist attack on that flight.”

The text honours Machchhar for what it describes as extraordinary courage, commends the pilots, cabin crew and passengers who helped secure the flight, wishes those injured a full recovery and calls for a full investigation.

The resolution also notes that four US citizens and 27 children were among the passengers.

Importantly, however, the legislative status needs to be described precisely.

As of October 9, the measure has been introduced and referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. There is no recorded House vote on the measure.

Therefore, reports saying the entire US House has already “passed” the resolution go further than the currently available legislative record.

The accurate formulation is that US lawmakers have introduced a bipartisan House resolution seeking to formally honour Machchhar and the others involved.

That status does not diminish the significance of the initiative.

A congressional resolution carrying Machchhar's name places the actions of an Indian commercial pilot aboard a Middle Eastern airline into the formal US legislative record only days after the incident.

Israel Will Also Honour Machchhar

Another major development emerged on October 9.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced that Machchhar is to receive Israel's Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism after he regains his strength.

The announcement came as Israel honoured six passengers for their roles during the emergency.

Herzog said Machchhar's bravery and professionalism helped prevent a catastrophe and indicated that the award would be presented once the captain's recovery allows it.

The recognition is particularly notable because it extends beyond diplomatic praise.

Machchhar is being placed alongside civilians whose actions during the flight were formally recognised for extraordinary courage.

That also reinforces an important part of the FZ1073 story: the emergency response was collective.

Machchhar created the opening.

Other people aboard acted on it.

Together, those actions allowed control of the aircraft to be restored.

How Is He Now?

The latest available medical information is encouraging.

After receiving initial treatment following the emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, Machchhar was transferred to the UAE for continued medical care.

India's Ministry of External Affairs said this week that he was recuperating well, responding positively to treatment and showing improvement.

The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi has remained in contact with his family, doctors, hospital officials and local authorities.

His family has also reported signs of physical progress.

On October 8, a family member told NDTV that Machchhar had been able to walk a small number of steps in hospital—an encouraging development given the seriousness of his injuries.

He nevertheless remains in recovery from significant trauma.

Aviation duties require strict medical fitness, and it is far too early to speculate about when—or whether—he will be cleared to return to flying.

The relevant question for now is his health rather than a timetable for returning to a cockpit.

The Pilot Who Refused to Give Up

There is an understandable temptation to turn stories like this into simplified tales of one hero saving an aircraft.

The reality is more useful.

Machchhar was seriously injured.

The aircraft was rapidly descending.

The cockpit door had become a decisive barrier.

Passengers and crew outside could not fully intervene until it opened.

Machchhar managed to reach that door.

Others then acted.

Trained pilots subsequently helped land the aircraft.

Medical help was provided to the injured captain.

The aircraft reached Tabuk safely.

Everyone aboard was accounted for.

Heroism in an aviation emergency can therefore mean something different from the cinematic image of a single person calmly controlling every aspect of a crisis.

It can mean completing one vital action when almost everything else has gone wrong.

For Machchhar, that action was reaching the cockpit door.

Why the Story Has Resonated in India

Part of the reaction in India comes from Machchhar's background.

He was not a military fighter pilot operating in combat conditions or a public figure accustomed to national attention.

He was a Mumbai-born commercial pilot carrying out a scheduled passenger flight.

Within minutes, an ordinary professional duty became an extreme survival situation.

His response has since brought recognition from political leaders, aviation professionals and governments across several countries.

For people who spend their careers in safety-critical professions, there is another dimension to the story.

Training often looks repetitive precisely because emergencies are rare.

Pilots rehearse abnormal situations, decision-making, aircraft handling, communication and emergency responses again and again in simulators and recurrent training.

No simulator can reproduce every detail of an event like FZ1073.

But experience can shape how a person recognises danger and chooses the next possible action when there is little time available.

Machchhar himself has connected his response to those years of experience.

What Still Needs to Be Established

International recognition should not be confused with completion of the investigation.

Authorities still need to establish the full sequence inside the cockpit, examine the aircraft's recorded data, determine the alleged attacker's motive, review possible security failures and establish whether anyone else was connected to the incident.

The UAE Attorney-General has said investigators are examining physical and digital evidence and that final findings will be announced after the necessary procedures are completed.

That distinction is particularly important in a story involving allegations of terrorism.

Officials may reach preliminary findings quickly because national-security concerns require an immediate response.

A full investigation has a different purpose: reconstructing the event through evidence and determining responsibility under applicable law.

Until that process is complete, Rajatheertha will continue to describe the co-pilot's specific actions as alleged where appropriate.

A Story That Has Changed in Eight Days

When Rajatheertha first reported the FZ1073 incident on October 1, several crucial questions remained open.

Machchhar's medical future was uncertain.

The UAE investigation had not yet publicly characterised the incident as an attempted terrorist act.

Machchhar had not yet given his detailed first-person account.

There was no US congressional resolution bearing his name.

Israel had not yet announced that it would give him its civilian heroism award.

All of those developments have now changed the story.

What has not changed is the central moment.

A seriously wounded pilot was on the cockpit floor of a descending aircraft.

He understood what was happening.

The door was close enough to reach.

He made one more effort.

And it opened.

Bottom Line

Captain Smit Machchhar, the Mumbai-born flydubai pilot, opened the cockpit door of Flight FZ1073 despite serious injuries during an alleged attack by the co-pilot. His action allowed others to intervene and helped restore control of the rapidly descending Boeing 737.

He is recovering in the UAE, showing encouraging medical progress. A bipartisan US House resolution has been introduced in his honour, and Israel has announced that he will receive the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism once he is strong enough.

The investigation into the incident continues. The co-pilot’s alleged actions remain allegations pending the outcome of the legal process.

Key Takeaway

Captain Smit Machchhar opened the cockpit door despite grave injuries.

US House resolution and Israel civilian heroism award announced.

Pilot recovering well in UAE hospital.

Investigation into the alleged cockpit attack continues.
