BJP candidate Hasi Rani Rath won the Nandigram Assembly by-election by 122,753 votes, securing 164,427 votes against Congress candidate Milan Pradhan’s 41,674, according to the final Election Commission of India count.

The Bharatiya Janata Party also won the Rejinagar Assembly bypoll in West Bengal, where Shankharavh Sarkar defeated Aam Janata Unnayan Party candidate Golam Nabi Azad (Robin) by 75,816 votes.

The results gave the BJP both of the West Bengal seats that went to bypolls on October 6, while the other contests held at the same time produced victories for Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in two Tamil Nadu Assembly seats, the BJP in Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency and the All India N.R. Congress in Puducherry’s Thattanchavady seat.

Counting was completed on October 9.

Key Takeaways

  • BJP’s Hasi Rani Rath won Nandigram by 122,753 votes with 75.94% vote share.
  • BJP’s Shankharavh Sarkar won Rejinagar by 75,816 votes.

The US votes in the 2026 midterms on November 3. Here is what is being elected, why House and Senate control matters, the major campaign issues and how readers abroad can follow the results.

14 Oct 2026
  • AINRC retained Thattanchavady in Puducherry.
  • All six October 2026 bypoll results are now final.
  • Hasi Rani Rath Wins Nandigram by 122,753 Votes

The scale of the Nandigram result was considerably larger than the margin recorded in the constituency only months earlier in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election.

Hasi Rani Rath received 164,427 votes, representing 75.94 percent of the votes counted in the bypoll.

Congress candidate Milan Pradhan finished second with 41,674 votes, or 19.25 percent.

Communist Party of India candidate Santi Gopal Giri came third with 5,779 votes.

The final margin between Rath and Pradhan was 122,753 votes.

Nandigram had fallen vacant after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who won both Nandigram and Bhabanipur in the 2026 Assembly election, chose to retain Bhabanipur.

That decision required a fresh election in Nandigram.

In the May 2026 Assembly election, Adhikari had won Nandigram with 127,301 votes against Trinamool Congress candidate Pabitra Kar’s 117,636 — a margin of 9,665 votes.

The October bypoll therefore produced a much wider numerical margin for the BJP than the general-election contest.

That comparison, however, needs context. A by-election and a full Assembly election take place under different political circumstances, may involve different candidates and alliances, and can produce different turnout and campaign dynamics. The large bypoll margin should therefore not automatically be treated as a direct measure of how the constituency would vote in another statewide election.

Hasi Rani Rath is the mother of Chandranath Rath, who had been associated with Adhikari and was killed in May 2026.

Why Nandigram Carries Unusual Political Weight

Nandigram is more than an ordinary Assembly constituency in West Bengal politics.

Its political importance stretches back to the land-acquisition conflict of 2007, when opposition to a proposed industrial project and the acquisition of agricultural land triggered a major confrontation.

On March 14, 2007, police firing in Nandigram killed 14 people, according to the National Human Rights Commission's account of the events. The episode became one of the defining controversies of the final years of Left Front rule in West Bengal and strengthened the political mobilisation against the then state government.

Nandigram again became a national political focal point during the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election.

Mamata Banerjee contested the constituency against Suvendu Adhikari, her former political colleague who had joined the BJP. Adhikari won that contest by just 1,956 votes.

Five years later, in the 2026 Assembly election, Adhikari retained Nandigram by a larger but still comparatively narrow 9,665-vote margin. Because he also won Bhabanipur and eventually retained that seat, Nandigram returned to the polls in October.

That history explains why even a by-election in Nandigram attracts attention well beyond Purba Medinipur district.

For the BJP, the latest result means the party has retained a constituency closely associated with its chief minister.

For its opponents, the size of the margin raises questions about organisation, candidate strength and the changed political environment after the 2026 Assembly election.

But a single constituency result cannot by itself establish the direction of the entire state electorate.

BJP Also Wins Rejinagar by 75,816 Votes

The BJP's second West Bengal victory came in Rejinagar in Murshidabad district.

Shankharavh Sarkar received 129,914 votes, or 63.14 percent of the total counted, according to the Election Commission.

Aam Janata Unnayan Party candidate Golam Nabi Azad (Robin) finished second with 54,098 votes, giving Sarkar an official victory margin of 75,816.

Congress candidate Abdullahil Kafi finished a distant third with 6,168 votes.

Rabiul Alam Chowdhury of Mamata All India Trinamool Congress received 3,847 votes, while CPI(M) candidate Md. Sayeed secured 3,797.

The seat went to a by-election after Aam Janata Unnayan Party founder Humayun Kabir, who had won both Rejinagar and Nowda in the 2026 Assembly election, retained Nowda.

Rejinagar drew particular political attention because it has a large Muslim electorate and because the contest featured several opposition formations rather than a straightforward two-party race.

BJP leaders have presented the result as evidence that the party has expanded its appeal among sections of voters who had historically been difficult for it to reach.

The constituency-level result alone, however, does not establish precisely how individual religious or social groups voted. Such conclusions require more detailed evidence than the aggregate result provides.

Another factor is the fragmented opposition field. The BJP’s principal challenger was the AJUP candidate, while Congress, different Trinamool formations, the CPI(M) and others also contested.

That makes Rejinagar important politically, but it also makes simplistic conclusions about a permanent realignment premature.

October 2026 Bypoll Results: All Six Seats

The October 6 by-elections covered five Assembly constituencies and one Lok Sabha constituency across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Assam.

BJP Wins Nagaon Lok Sabha Bypoll in Assam

The BJP also won the only parliamentary constituency involved in this round of by-elections.

In Assam's Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency, Devasish Sharma received 714,349 votes.

Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal of the All India United Democratic Front finished second with 572,125 votes.

The resulting margin was 142,224 votes.

Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora placed third with 129,492 votes.

The Nagaon result gave the BJP another victory in the October bypoll round, but, as with the Assembly results, its broader significance should be assessed alongside constituency-level political conditions rather than treated as a standalone national trend.

TVK Wins Both Tamil Nadu Assembly Bypolls

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam won both Madurantakam and Dharapuram.

In Madurantakam, K. Maragatham Kumaravel received 74,048 votes, defeating DMK candidate I. Paranthamen, who polled 54,008.

    The margin was 20,040 votes.

AIADMK candidate S. Kanitha Sampath finished third with 47,450 votes.

The contest was more closely fought in Dharapuram.

TVK candidate Sathyabama P. received 66,841 votes compared with 57,370 for DMK candidate Suganya S., giving TVK a margin of 9,471.

AIADMK candidate Banumathi K. finished third with 45,280 votes.

The two victories were closely watched because they represented an electoral test for Tamil Nadu's ruling TVK after the 2026 Assembly election.

The margins, particularly in Dharapuram, also show why the results are better read constituency by constituency rather than simply as a two-seat sweep.

    AINRC Retains Thattanchavady in Puducherry

In Puducherry, All India N.R. Congress candidate Ashok Anand won the Thattanchavady Assembly by-election.

Anand received 13,358 votes, or 61.12 percent of the total counted.

Congress candidate E. Vinayagam finished second with 4,876 votes, while DMK candidate K. Sethu alias Sethuselvam was third with 2,664.

The winning margin was 8,482 votes.

The result allowed the AINRC to retain the constituency.

Polling in Bengal Was Followed by Allegations and Counterclaims

The West Bengal contests were politically contentious even before counting began.

Opposition parties raised allegations about the conduct of polling and sought repolling in some circumstances, including claims concerning intimidation and irregularities.

The BJP rejected those allegations and maintained that the polling was conducted peacefully.

Those are competing political claims and should not be treated as established findings simply because one side made them.

The final constituency results published by the Election Commission show the completed vote counts. Any separate allegation concerning electoral misconduct would require evidence and findings from the appropriate election or judicial authorities.

That distinction matters when interpreting a politically charged result.

What Do the Bengal Results Actually Tell Us?

The clearest factual conclusion is straightforward: the BJP retained Nandigram and won Rejinagar, and it did so by large margins.

Nandigram reinforces the BJP's control of a constituency closely identified with Suvendu Adhikari.

Rejinagar gives the party a victory in a constituency with a different demographic and political profile and where the opposition vote was distributed across several parties.

Beyond that, broader conclusions need caution.

Bypolls can function as tests of governments, candidates and party organisations, but they are not miniature versions of a general election. Candidate selection, local networks, voter turnout, alliance structures and the stakes perceived by voters can differ substantially.

The results therefore provide evidence about these six constituencies on October 6, 2026. They do not, by themselves, predict the outcome of the next statewide or national election.

Nandigram Margin Stands Out Against the May Result

The numerical change in Nandigram remains one of the most striking features of the result.

Suvendu Adhikari won the constituency in May by 9,665 votes.

Hasi Rani Rath has now won the bypoll by 122,753.

Rath's vote share was 75.94 percent compared with 19.25 percent for Milan Pradhan.

Those figures show how decisively the October contest ended.

They should not be interpreted as a simple swing calculation against May because the candidates, party alignments and electoral circumstances were different.

Still, the result means the BJP did substantially more than merely hold the seat: its candidate secured a three-quarters share of the votes counted.

Rejinagar Could Attract More Political Scrutiny

Rejinagar may ultimately generate as much political discussion as Nandigram because the BJP was not simply defending an existing seat there.

Shankharavh Sarkar's 63.14 percent vote share placed him well ahead of AJUP's Golam Nabi Azad, who received 26.29 percent.

Congress, CPI(M) and competing Trinamool formations each finished far behind the first two candidates.

BJP leaders are likely to cite the result while discussing the party's political reach in Murshidabad and among a wider cross-section of voters.

Opposition parties, meanwhile, have already raised questions about polling conditions and will examine the impact of their fragmented candidate field.

A more reliable assessment of what changed politically in Rejinagar will require comparison with previous booth-level results and future elections rather than assumptions based solely on the constituency's demographic profile.

    What Happens Next?

The immediate electoral question is settled: the Election Commission's completed counts identify the winners in all six constituencies.

For West Bengal, attention will now move from whether the BJP can retain Nandigram to how the party and its opponents interpret the unusually large margins in Nandigram and Rejinagar.

The results also give political parties fresh data about organisation and voter mobilisation only months after major Assembly elections in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

For readers, the most important distinction is between the confirmed result and the political interpretation placed on it.

The confirmed facts are that Hasi Rani Rath won Nandigram by 122,753 votes, Shankharavh Sarkar won Rejinagar by 75,816, TVK won the two Tamil Nadu Assembly contests, AINRC won Thattanchavady and BJP candidate Devasish Sharma won the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll.

What those outcomes mean for future elections will require more evidence than one round of bypolls can provide.

    Bottom Line

BJP’s Hasi Rani Rath won the Nandigram Assembly bypoll by 122,753 votes, while the party also secured Rejinagar by 75,816 votes. TVK won both Tamil Nadu seats, BJP took Nagaon Lok Sabha in Assam, and AINRC retained Thattanchavady in Puducherry. The results are final as per the Election Commission.

    Key Takeaway

BJP sweeps both West Bengal bypolls with large margins.

TVK wins Madurantakam and Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu.

BJP takes Nagaon Lok Sabha; AINRC holds Thattanchavady.

All six October 2026 bypoll results confirmed.
