Nagaon Lok Sabha Result: BJP’s Devasish Sharma Builds Early Lead
The Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency in Assam is one of the most significant contests in the current round because it is the only parliamentary seat going through a by-election.
BJP candidate Devasish Sharma moved ahead as counting progressed. An earlier Election Commission update showed Sharma leading Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora, but subsequent reported counting figures showed the BJP candidate extending his advantage significantly.
The latest verified reporting available during this update put Sharma at 59,865 votes, with AIUDF chief Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal at 23,492 votes — a gap of 36,373 votes. Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora was reported at 7,668 votes at that stage.
The rankings are significant because the contest involves three recognisable political forces in Assam: the BJP, Congress and AIUDF. However, a large lead during an intermediate stage of counting still does not constitute a declared victory.
Nagaon recorded turnout of about 76.19% in the October 6 bypoll. Counting is being conducted through multiple Assembly segments of the parliamentary constituency, meaning the margin can change as results from different areas enter the consolidated total.
The Nagaon result will determine the constituency’s new MP, although the single-seat outcome by itself is not expected to alter the balance of power in the Lok Sabha.
Madurantakam is among the most politically watched seats of the day because the result provides an early electoral test for Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government.
TVK candidate K Maragatham Kumaravel was ahead in the latest verified figures used for this live update. Kumaravel had 7,615 votes against DMK candidate I Paranthamen’s 6,008 and AIADMK candidate S Kanithasampath’s 4,301.
Based on those reported totals, Kumaravel’s advantage over Paranthamen stood at 1,607 votes.
Madurantakam is particularly interesting because Kumaravel had won the constituency for the AIADMK in the 2026 Assembly election before subsequently leaving the party and joining TVK. Her resignation contributed to the need for this by-election, and TVK has now fielded her as its candidate.
That makes the contest more than a conventional ruling-party versus opposition fight. It also tests whether voters who previously backed the candidate under one party banner are willing to support her after a change in political affiliation.
The DMK and AIADMK performances will consequently matter even if neither party leads in the early rounds. Their vote totals will help show how the opposition vote is being distributed several months after the state election.
Madurantakam recorded turnout of roughly 86.26%, giving the constituency one of the stronger participation rates among the six seats being counted.
Dharapuram Result: AIADMK and TVK in Close Contest
Dharapuram has produced one of the tighter early battles.
After four rounds of counting, AIADMK candidate K Banumathi had 10,773 votes, while TVK candidate P Satyabama had 9,815. DMK candidate S Suganya was also within reach with 8,906 votes.
That gave Banumathi an advantage of only 958 votes over Satyabama at that point — a margin small enough that subsequent rounds could change the leader.
The contest has additional political significance because Satyabama, like the TVK candidate in Madurantakam, previously represented the constituency as an AIADMK MLA before joining Vijay’s party.
The two Tamil Nadu bypolls therefore provide an unusual simultaneous test of candidate loyalty, party strength and TVK’s ability to consolidate its position after forming the state government in May.
A TVK victory in both constituencies would strengthen the party’s argument that its Assembly election performance has translated into continuing voter support. An AIADMK recovery in Dharapuram, by contrast, would demonstrate that the opposition retains an ability to challenge TVK even in a constituency represented by a former AIADMK legislator who moved to the ruling party.
The DMK’s vote share is another number to watch. A three-way competitive result could be politically more informative than simply looking at which party eventually crosses the finish line first.
Dharapuram recorded turnout of about 80.30%.
Nandigram Result: BJP’s Hasirani Rath Leads in Early Trends
Nandigram is again at the centre of West Bengal’s political attention.
Early counting reports placed BJP candidate Hasirani Rath in front. However, a dependable current margin was not available from the verified material used for this update, so the live table does not assign an unsupported numerical lead.
That distinction is important in a live result story. Postal-ballot trends and the first EVM rounds can produce a leader without showing how the constituency will ultimately vote once all areas are counted.
Nandigram became vacant after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who won more than one constituency in the 2026 Assembly election, chose to retain Bhabanipur.
The bypoll is therefore BJP’s first opportunity to defend one of the state’s most politically symbolic constituencies after the party formed the West Bengal government earlier this year.
Congress candidate Milan Pradhan is among Rath’s challengers, while the wider opposition configuration in the seat has also attracted attention following changes in the Trinamool Congress camp.
Nandigram recorded turnout of about 80.89%.
The eventual result will be closely examined for the size of the BJP vote, the degree of opposition consolidation and whether the ruling party can retain its advantage in a constituency that has played an outsized role in West Bengal politics.
Still, one by-election result should not automatically be treated as a statewide verdict. Local candidate strength, turnout patterns and constituency-specific political circumstances can strongly influence a bypoll.
Rejinagar Result: BJP Takes Strong Early Lead
The early Rejinagar numbers also favoured the BJP.
Initial reporting from the count showed BJP candidate Sakharav Sarkar establishing an advantage of approximately 11,033 votes in the opening stage. Congress candidate Abdullahil Kafi and Aam Janata Unnayan Party candidate Golam Nabi Azad were among the other candidates in the contest.
Rejinagar became vacant after Aam Janata Unnayan Party chief Humayun Kabir, who won more than one Assembly constituency, retained Naoda rather than Rejinagar.
The constituency saw high political tension during the by-election campaign and polling period. Opposition parties made allegations regarding intimidation and irregularities, while the BJP rejected such accusations. Election authorities described polling overall as largely peaceful.
Those competing claims should remain attributed rather than presented as established findings unless election authorities or courts make a definitive determination.
Around 80.08% turnout was reported in Rejinagar.
Like Nandigram, the result will be watched for indications of how the BJP government is performing electorally only months after taking office, while also revealing how votes are being divided across the fragmented opposition.
Thattanchavady Result: AINRC’s Ashok Anand Ahead
In Puducherry, AINRC candidate Ashok Anand established a sizeable early advantage in Thattanchavady.
After the fourth counting round, reporting placed Anand’s lead at approximately 10,467 votes. Congress candidate E Vinayagam was reported with 3,693 votes at that stage.
The result is important for Chief Minister N Rangasamy’s AINRC-led government and its allies because it provides another electoral reading after the Assembly election earlier this year.
The Election Commission’s earlier first-round figures had also placed Anand ahead, showing that the AINRC candidate’s advantage was present from the beginning of EVM counting rather than emerging only in a later round.
Thattanchavady recorded turnout of about 80.81%.
While the scale of the reported lead makes the contest notable, the result should continue to be labelled a trend until the Returning Officer completes the process and formally declares the winner.
Why These Six Bypoll Results Matter
By-elections do not always predict what will happen in a future statewide or national election. They are fought in individual constituencies, often following resignations or unusual political circumstances, and voters may respond differently from the way they would during a full Assembly or Lok Sabha election.
Even so, the October 9 results carry unusual political interest because several of the governments and party arrangements being tested are relatively new.
In Tamil Nadu, Madurantakam and Dharapuram are the first significant electoral tests for Vijay’s TVK government after its victory in the May 2026 Assembly election. Both constituencies are also being contested by former AIADMK legislators now running for TVK, making the results relevant to the politics of party defections.
In West Bengal, Nandigram and Rejinagar test the BJP’s ability to maintain electoral momentum after forming the state government and ending the previous TMC administration.
Puducherry’s Thattanchavady result provides another measure of support for the AINRC-led government.
Nagaon, meanwhile, brings BJP, Congress and AIUDF into a high-profile parliamentary contest in Assam.
The useful question is therefore not simply how many of the six seats each party wins. The final vote shares, victory margins and movement between parties may provide a more detailed picture of the political changes taking place in each state.
Counting Started at 8 AM
Vote counting began at 8 am on October 9, starting with postal ballots before EVM votes were taken up.
The Election Commission’s results portal displays information being entered by Returning Officers from their respective counting centres. The Commission also cautions that final constituency data is reflected through the formal result documentation.
For that reason, live news coverage should clearly separate three stages:
Leading: A candidate is currently ahead but counting remains incomplete.
Won: The constituency result has been formally declared.
Final margin: The difference between the winner and runner-up after completion of counting.
This Rajatheertha live page will use those distinctions so that provisional trends are not incorrectly presented as final victories.
Latest Bypoll Results: What to Watch Next
The most immediate developments to watch are whether BJP’s sizeable Nagaon lead continues as more Assembly segments are counted, whether TVK can maintain its advantage in Madurantakam, and whether AIADMK can protect its narrow Dharapuram lead.
Nandigram also requires attention because an early BJP advantage has emerged without a sufficiently reliable current numerical margin for this update.
In Rejinagar, the size and durability of the BJP’s early lead will be important as later rounds arrive.
Thattanchavady appears to have produced a substantial early AINRC advantage, but the official declaration remains the key milestone.
This page will be updated seat by seat as counting progresses. Readers should distinguish changing live trends from declared results, particularly during the early and middle rounds of counting.
Bottom Line
Counting is underway for six bypolls on October 9, 2026. Early trends show BJP leading in Nagaon, Nandigram and Rejinagar; TVK ahead in Madurantakam; AIADMK narrowly ahead in Dharapuram; and AINRC leading in Thattanchavady.
All figures remain provisional until official declaration. This page will be continuously updated as more rounds are completed and winners are confirmed.
